NEW YORK, USA - Zinat Hossain, a college student of Bangladeshi descent, was killed by suicide on a New York train line, according to U.S. authorities. Her family and the Bangladeshi expat community, however, disagree.
Md Kabir, Zinat's grandfather, said on Saturday afternoon, before funeral prayers at the Baitul Jannah Mosque in Brooklyn:
"According to the police report, 23-year-old Zinat committed suicide, but we don't believe it."
"They claimed she died as a result of the fall." In reality, however, this was a 'hate crime.' Our community must unite in opposition to this."
Zinat, the only daughter of Amir and Jasmine Hossain, attended Hunter College in New York. The family is from Cumilla's Daudkandi Upazila.
On Wednesday night, police discovered the body beneath a train at the 55th Street Station. She was killed on her way home from class.
Zinat lived with her mother and father on 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in New York.
The family moved to the United States in 2015. Abid Hossain, Zinat's only brother, is a Dhaka's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University postgraduate student.
