ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - In a first, Alphabet subsidiary Google has registered as a company with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), paving the way for other multinational corporations to establish offices in Pakistan.
The US-based tech giant has registered with the SECP because, under the "Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight, and Safeguards) Rules, 2021," social media companies were required to open offices in the country.
Syed Aminul Haque, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, told Geo News that following the registration of the American multinational technology company, other social media platforms would open offices in Pakistan.
"TikTok will soon open an office in Pakistan." Companies remain hesitant due to a lack of trust and inconsistent policies," he said while stating that his ministry will provide full support to foreign firms.
According to social media rules, the Pakistani government has made company registration mandatory, and Google has registered as a company in this context.
If Google's server is built in Pakistan, data will be safe. Currently, all companies' data, including social media, is stored outside Pakistan.
