PHOENIX, Arizona: Located in the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix again broke another record over the weekend when temperatures reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius).
It was the 54th day in 2023 when the official reading at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport hit 110 degrees F, surpassing the previous record of 53 days set in 2020.
National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Salerno said the heat wave could reach 55 days.
An extreme heat warning remained in force, with temperatures forecasted to reach 111 degrees F on Sunday and 106 degrees F this week.
Phoenix experienced the hottest three months since records began in 1895, including the hottest July and the second-hottest August, Salerno added.
In July, Phoenix also set a record with a 31-day streak of highs at or above 110 degrees F, surpassing the previous record of 18 consecutive days set in 1974.
The historic heat wave in the summer of 2023 stretched from Texas across New Mexico and Arizona, and into California's desert.
